Compassion: Love in Action

Advent is a season of waiting, but it is not passive waiting. We wait with open hearts, watching for how God’s love shows up in real and tangible ways. The fourth Sunday of Advent invites us to focus on love, not as a warm feeling or a sentimental idea, but as something lived and practiced. Scripture reminds us that God is love and that God’s love was revealed by sending Jesus into the world. From the very beginning, compassion is how God’s love takes shape. Compassion is love in action.

First, John tells us that we love because God first loved us. That matters because it means compassion does not begin with our own goodness or effort. It begins with God. Jesus is the clearest picture of this truth. God did not stay distant or detached from human pain. God stepped into our world, into our mess, into our suffering. The birth of Christ is God’s compassion made visible. When we show compassion to one another, we are participating in that same holy love. Compassion is love in action, and it is how the invisible God becomes visible in our lives.

As Christmas draws near, we are invited to ask ourselves what love looks like in motion. Who needs kindness, patience, forgiveness, or presence this week? How can we move beyond words and allow our love to take shape through our actions? When we choose compassion, we reflect the heart of God. This Advent, may we prepare room not only in our hearts, but also in our lives, remembering always that compassion is love in action.

Grace and peace because grace always goes before peace,

Pastor Sharon
